What Do You Do When Your Hand Is A Foot?

I have to confess that this last week has been particularly hard on the old crafting confidence.  Even though I craft most days and on those odd days that I don't, well I just feel plain odd.   But this has been a real dog of a week or two as I have been feeling odd crafting as well as not.   I am not entirely sure what has delt my cardmaking confidence this near fatal blow, but I have torn up and or turfed more of my latest crafty offerings than I think was actually very good for me.  I know it's only paper, but binning my cards made during this weird time hasn't ended up making me feel any better but kind of has added insult to injury I think now with the benefit of hindsight.  Luckily though, I have a few earth angels in my house that have been scurrying around mounting clandestine rescue missions to save my cards from the old circular file (the garbage). The card below is one of the cards that got hurled and was later presented to me with a box of chocolates, a glass of fabulous claret, and the sweetest chorus of "we love you and your work mom" that I think I have ever heard.   Awww.

Other cards and cards-in-waiting were also successfully rescued over the last few days, thankfully, as I realize now that I was just, hopefully, having what I understand to be a normal reaction to what can happen from time to time when your mojo goes a bit AWOL and your mixing amongst other sublimely talented crafters.  I am not saying my mojo is back, because it certainly doesn't feel like it is, but I am now just not focused on questioning if I ever had any mojo at all to begin with, which is what I think I have been most acutely grappling with over the last little while.    Having come to this realization,  I have decided that I will not craft for challenges this week or so until I get my confidence back a bit.  Hopefully this will help some.  So until then, I just thought I'd share with you a few of the rescued cards and a few other bits and bobs that I have made recently as I work on gently getting my confidence back a bit.

This is a Sweet 16 birthday card I made last week for my eldest daughter. The thought behind the playing cards was to try something a bit quirky, a weeny bit arty, and left of center...bit like my gorgeous now 16 year old, inner city skater girl who creates the most amazing street art, is totally funny as, so compassionate, and loves a hand or two of cards.  Plus, I am sure she'd cringe if I gave her your typical "sweet as pie" birthday card in any case.  Yes, she's my fabulous girl, but she's still a teenager after all.  *wink*  Enough said.  Bless.  As this card was binned, I did make another which she (politely) liked, but when she saw this one she was thrilled.  Go figure?

Anyways...but most importantly, thank you so much for stopping by and for allowing me to share with you not only the joys, but some of the pitfalls along the way on my adventures in papercrafting.  Hugs.

Jen, this card is sooooo clever!!! It's awesome! I'm not just saying that--your daughter is right--this is just too, too terrific! I only wish I had a magazine to publish it in or a challenge to give it an award for!

What a cool card, I'm not surprised she liked it, it sounds like it was just up her alley! Making the '16' with the cards was so clever too!

Jen, I am so sorry you are having creative difficulties, but I absolutely know exactly how you feel. Sometimes I think I should just sell all my stuff as I spend so much time and money trying to come up with the next most creative card ever! I agree with your taking a tiny break from challenges. My guess is in a day or two you will be right back at it as I think it is in our blood. Your kids sound wonderful and so supportive. Your daughters birthday card is great, and I really mean it. Those playing cards adding up to 16 was very clever and they went really well with the other elements on your card. Don't give up. You are really very talented.

I hope you will find cardmaking less "stressful" soon. I check your new posts as soon as I can. So much fine cards to see! And this card-card was fun. I suppose there is an ace behind the third card? I will steel this idea, be sure!! Thanks.
I hope you will have a fine day.
Hugs from Norway.

It's so fun to see a card that has a little surprise!! Using the playing cards for the '16' year old birthday girl really is so clever!! The shaped card is awesome too. I rarely make anything with a different shape, so I'll have to give this a try.
Your kids sound so supportive and sweet - I think that their actions speak louder than words!! Have a great day! Hugs.

Oh Jen, I was so sad to read about you questioning your ability. Some days the world doesn't seem to flow in our direction, does it?
Rest assured that as long as you enjoy the process (journey) the end result doesn't matter any where NEAR as much as we think.
And your daughter's clever BD card proves it. Is this not the most creative thing?! Pure love, with a touch of sass!
I say stop being so hard on yourself and just have fun. You don't have to share it with us, but DON'T throw them away...bad karma methinks to toss something that could potentially bring a smile to another's face.
You are a doll. You are kind, thoughtful, clearly intelligent, and have an utterly astonishing creative spirit.
Let it shine.

Jen, I hope you're feeling better. We all lose mojo here and there (like now for me, lol). Your family is SO sweet - rescuing your cards and bringing them to you with chocolate. You may not find your work valuable, but they do and we do! Plus I find creating helps me lose stress and DOES help me stay sane - so even if I don't like my creation, at least the process helped me in some way, lol. And why would you scrap this card? To me, it is perfect for a teen - which is why your daughter loved it!

Jen, I totally know where you are coming from! I think lately I have more of "these" days than good creative ones! Keep your head held high as this card is definitely one that should be seen!! I love it! It is so clever! :)

Did you hear that? That KER-PLUNK from the other side of the world? I just fell off my chair when I read your post. Next time you pull a stunt like that, it is only right that you offer up a warning so I can put my helmet on before reading. Girlfriend, you are DAMN talented! You have such an artsy style that I admire and adore! I still remember a card you made for a a waltzing Mouse challenge that was
G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S! That being said, I can TOTALLY relate to what you are feeling. I actually felt panic stricken at one point as I struggled night after night to pull something.... ANYTHING .....together that seemed even halfaway decent. It's not fun. Glad you have a live in fan club to rescue your self-rejected works of art. This card with playing cards is so flippin' cool! I am going to pour myself a glass of wine and pretend to clink my glass to yours, crafty chick! Hang in there!

First of all, LOVE your creative card!!! Seriously out of the box thinking, which I love! As for the mojo thing (or lack thereof), my advice is just to do what YOU love. Challenges can be fun if you're looking for, well, a challenge, but they can be stressful and inhibit your creativity if you're worried about making the greatest card ever, or comparing your work to what others are creating. I read a book once called "Do what you love and the money will follow". Well I say "Do what you love and the creativity will follow", when it comes to this craft we love so much. Make some cards "just for fun", or just to experiment with a new technique, whatever it is that will make YOU happy :)

What a fun card Jen! Love the shape and so creative how you featured playing cards! I bet your daughter loved it! As far as your MOJO, I think if you create from the heart you can't go wrong :) Do what makes you happy and enjoy what you do :) Can NEVER go wrong with that.

Hi Jen - this is such a beautiful card, as are all the ones on your blog! Thank you for sharing and please please keep on sharing (instead of throwing cards away! And if you ever get the urge to purge your gorgeous cards again, maybe ditch the craft studio for a walk or coffee by the harbour....it will be my shout!) Sue x

What a cool card - I can certainly understand why your daughter loved it. So sorry to hear about your 'down' days - I think it's something we all go through from time to time. But hang in there and just do some cards for you and for fun. Love visiting your blog :)
